O auto ter%u00e1 sido trazido pelos colonos portugueses, n%u00e3o sendo conhecida em pormenor a data da introdu%u00e7%u00e3o uma vez que a primeira edi%u00e7%u00e3o impressa da pe%u00e7a %u00e9 de 1664, quase 200 anos depois da chegada dos navegadores portugueses a S%u00e3o Tom%u00e9.Na adapta%u00e7%u00e3o s%u00e3o-tomense o auto prolonga-se por cerca de cinco horas, no caso das representa%u00e7%u00f5es menos longas, e %u00e9 um desfile de um extenso grupo de atores, cerca de 30 sem contar com a banda de m%u00fasica, vestidos para o efeito e caracterizados com m%u00e1scaras. Ao longo dos tempos a %u201ctrag%u00e9dia%u201d original do cego madeirense foi incorporando elementos pr%u00f3prios da cultura africana e da realidade s%u00e3o-tomense emergindo como %u201cTchiloli%u201d, uma manifesta%u00e7%u00e3o cultural %u00fanica e cativante. O culto popular associado ao auto traduz-se tamb%u00e9m pelo facto de os pap%u00e9is serem heredit%u00e1rios, cada ator representa o mesmo papel durante toda a vida %u201cpassando-o%u201d depois a filhos ou parentes que escolher.Tchiloli is considered the popular scenic expression most characteristic of S%u00e3o Tome and Principe, a play interpreted and recited the most important festivals of the country.The play is an adaptation of the %u201cTragedy of the Marquis of Mantua and Emperor Charlemagne%u201d, attributed to Baltazar Dias, known as %u201cthe blind of Madeira Island%u201d, heir to the traditions of medieval blind minstrels who went from fair to fair declaiming their works. The play would have been brought by the Portuguese settlers, but the date of its introduction is not known since the first printed edition of the play dates back to 1664, almost 200 years after the arrival of the Portuguese navigators to S%u00e3o Tome. In the S%u00e3o Tome adaptation, the play goes on for about five hours, for the shorter representations, and there is a parade of a large group of actors, about 30, without mentioning the music band, dressed and wearing masks for the purpose. Over time the original %u201ctragedy%u201d of the blind from Madeira incorporated elements of African culture and of the reality of S%u00e3o Tome, emerging as %u201cTchiloli%u201d, a unique and captivating cultural event. The popular cult associated with the play also reflects the fact that the roles are hereditary, with each actor playing the same role throughout life and %u201cpassing it%u201d to their children or relatives that he/she chooses.
